Teenager ALEX RULLO can’t wait to get back to Barbagallo Raceway for next week’s Perth Supersprint, when the Virgin Australia Supercars return to Western Australia May 5-7.

“It’s my home crowd,” he said. “And my old school, Trinity College, has been both supportive and understanding, helping me juggle both my academic and sporting commitments.”

At just 16, the Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport driver this year broke the record as the youngest ever driver in the Supercars Championship. It hasn’t been an overnight success. He finished runner-up in the WA State Karting Championships in 2014, and won the WA Hyundai Excel Championship that same year. In 2015, Alex Rullo stepped up to the V8 Touring Car series, taking home second in the championship and earning the Rookie of the Year award.

A Real Eye-Catcher

He caught the eye of LDM principal Lucas Dumbrell for last year’s Dunlop Series. “Age is no barrier to the team,” Lucas said. “I’m the youngest team owner with the youngest driver and team in pit lane, and we’re building for the future while giving opportunities to young and up-coming guys and girls.”

Alex Rullo is not the only Trinitarian to become involved in Supercars. Jayden Marciano also attended the prestigious boys’ college, and works alongside him on car #62 as one of the team’s Data Engineers.

“There’s a lot of preparation involved in running a race car team that most fans don’t get to see,” Alex said. “So it’s great to have another West Australian – let alone a Trinity College boy – on my Team.”

Jayden is pretty chuffed about it too. “This year it’s been pretty awesome to be able to work with Alex as his Data Engineer,” he said. “We make sure the data acquisition systems on the car are working correctly, so we’re getting the information to help us make the car better for him over a race weekend. And we’re also going through that data to help him find areas to progress as a driver.”
