This Definitely is a Lad to Watch

JOEY MAWSON this week has his first official test ahead of his 2017 campaign for the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

The PODIUM-backed Sydneysider grids up at the Hungaroring Friday and Saturday before heading to the Red Bull Ring in Austria, March 28-29.

Joey recently successfully completed private trials in Spain and Portugal with his Dutch Van Amersfoort Racing Team, providing a strong base for his coming schedule.

“Our private test days were all about getting a solid base to start the year, and gaining a real understanding of the effect of the various set-up changes,” he said.  “As this is my first year in a F3 car I’m also learning about all the different areas of the car that can be changed – it’s a lot more complex than F4.”

Twenty cars from five different teams are confirmed for this year’s championship – starting April 14-16 at Silverstone, and finishing at the Hockenheimring in October. Joey is one of five rookies contesting the prestigious championship.  His main 2016 rival, Mick Schumacher (son of Michael), has also stepped up for the European F3 title.

Third Year at Van Amersfoort Racing

Joining the 20-year-old Aussie in the Van Amersfoort Racing garage are 18-year-olds Pedro Piquet (son of three-time F1 champion, Nelson) and Harrison Newey (son of gun F1 engineer,  Adrian) and German David Beckmann, aged 16.

“Being my third year with the Van Amersfoort team it really feels like home,” Joey said. “I’m loving being back at the factory and can’t wait to get behind the wheel at the test days. The Hungaroring is one of only two in the entire championship that I’ve never driven on, so to be able to get some laps on the circuit before the season starts should put me in a good position for the year ahead.”

The 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship consists of 30 races across 10 events throughout Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and The Netherlands.

The series boasts an impressive stable of alumni with F1 World Champions Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg all graduates. Lance Stroll won the 2016 Formula 3 championship securing a 2017 Williams F1 GP seat. Red Bull’s wild child Max Verstappen also advanced from F3.
