VALE – A Wise and Gentle Man

PETER NELSON, one of the great administrators of Australian motorsport during the past 40 years, died last week .

I had the pleasure of serving alongside Peter on CAMS’ Australian Motor Race Commission for five years, until 2007.      When he spoke, I most certainly listened.    I gained much from his wisdom.    Not the least of which was a semblance of reasoned patience.

Peter was always calm, cool, collected, especially knowledgeable.    And decisive.     No great surprise, of course, for the man who held the prestigious role of Secretary of the Australian Grand Prix – both in Adelaide and Melbourne – for 22 years.

Peter was long-time president of his beloved Phillip Island Auto Racing Club.     The qualified pharmacist also held senior responsibilities at F1 Grands Prix internationally,  the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and the World Superbike Championship.     He was awarded Life Membership of CAMS in 2002.

Eugene Arocca, chief executive of the sport’s governing body:     “Peter was without question the architect of running a modern Formula 1 race, not just here in Australia but also around the world.”

John Harnden, AGP Corporation chairman:    “His contribution, not only at Formula 1 events around the world, but also in MotoGP, helped shape the organisation of motorsport as we know it today for which we are forever grateful.”
