The Life and Times of Adrian Chambers

A seriously exciting time

AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, I’ve been a journalist since the early ‘60s. I did my AJA cadetship at the Launceston Examiner in northern Tasmania and Queensland’s Gold Coast. I’ve worked since in television, radio, print and, since mid-2016, online.

Originally from London, UK, I studied at Sydney-based Australian Film, Television and Radio School and Perth’s Murdoch University.   For the past 45 years, I’ve lived in Western Australia, overlooking the Indian Ocean at my home at Ocean Reef, on Perth’s stunning northern beaches.

During the tumultuous mid ’60s and early ’70s, I was NSW correspondent for the now defunct Brisbane Telegraph, based at the Sydney Morning Herald building in Broadway. It was one seriously exciting time to be working as a journo in that extraordinary city. And one of the great periods of my life’s journey.

A really dumb decision

I then sold my beautiful Woollahra home (one of many dumb decisions in my life) and took off on a whim for a few years to go sailing and adventuring, based in Puerto Jose Banus, in Franco’s then-spooky Spain and the subsequent enlightenment of King Carlos.    Crazy, but immensely rewarding.  Puerto Banus, near Marbella, is still among the world’s finest yachting ports.

Returning to Australia in December ’77, I was headhunted by that remarkable Aussie entrepreneur Lang Hancock, and worked in the political scene in Perth with the legendary Sir Charles Court‘s WA Coalition Government.

Joondalup Country Club

A change of tack and, for nine years I was executive director of the PGA of Australia (WA), based primarily at Perth’s superb Joondalup Country Club.

And along the way, I’ve managed to have a couple of books published.

For the past 20 years, I’ve been involved with motorsport, including an informative 10 years as general manager of the WA Sporting Car Club, custodians of Barbagallo Raceway, now reverted to Wanneroo Raceway, and more recently Carco.com.au Raceway – and still WA’s premier motor racing venue. I was privileged to work with such club luminaries as John Hurney, Dave Walker, Gordon Mitchell, Ken Coppin, and Professor Michael Henderson and my PA Jennifer Harrison, all of whom supported the rookie along a tricky pathway.

Motorsport Australia

“During my time at the WASCC, I am particularly honoured to have served for some years as a commissioner on the Australian Motor Racing Commission, then the peak body for provision of advice to the Board of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (rebadged in 2020 as Motorsport Australia) regarding all matters related to the discipline of four-wheeled motor racing.”

Adrian Chambers

Motor racing columnist

It has been my good fortune to work with a host of wonderfully talented people some of whom – including Howard Sattler, my dear mate of 50+ years – are no longer with us. I’ve learned a great deal in the process.  And I shall never forget them.

Before embarking on my online odyssey, I enjoyed five years as motor racing columnist with The West Australian – this great State’s metropolitan newspaper. I was thoroughly engrossed with the experience, and am grateful to my editor, Sam Jeremic.

The help of great mates

I am forever grateful to my good friend Bert van Zuylen for setting me along the rocky path in 2016 to my current venture Adrian Chambers Motorsports – with the lofty aim of promoting motorsport wherever it might be.

By early 2022 ACM had published more than 750 posts, with their accompanying images – most of which are available in our Archives, although space limitations force me to adopt a regular culling process.

To achieve that required the support of our subscribers, and my supporters, the vital assets on whom my website continues to depend.

My thanks go out to my dear mate Allan Letcher who has been the backbone of ACM, keeping me sane during 2020 when the promised rebuild seemed to be going from bad to worse. Not much fun, but King Al was there to point me in the right direction. Al‘s Automotive Equipment WA and Fork Lift Sales and Hire are the specialists in their trade.

And popular Perth motorsport identity Dick Ward has been alongside me all they way. Dick – and his thriving Go-Gear Racing Services – has always been a friendly stalwart in support of Western Australia’s close-knit motoring community, over many years.

Ozbiztech to the Rescue

In late 2020, ACM was fortunate to secure the services of Sydney IT guru Zaid Bilal and his company Ozbiztech Pty Ltd.  Zaid and his team have solved the many problems we have faced in recent times with their knowledge and exceptional skills, keeping ACM relevant and healthy. I heartily recommend Ozbiztech – digital solution providers par excellence. My thanks, Zaid!

MY THANKS AND LOVE especially go to my wonderful sons – pictured here with the “Old Boy” – Robbiesam, with my delightful grandson Jordan. And Sebastian with me and the very charming Daniel Ricciardo (who will part ways with McLaren at the end of 2022), in the feature image at the top of the page.

My three boys were instrumental in returning me to good health during interesting times in recent years. I am immensely proud of them.

They continue to be my towers of strength.

Best regards to you all.

And thank you.

Adrian
