There have been a total of 32 different champions in the F1 drivers’ championship since the series began in 1950.

If Lewis Hamilton is to add to his now five world-titles, he would surpass Juan Manuel Fangio and be on target to catch up with seven-time champion Michael Schumacher.
Italy’s Giuseppe Farina won the inaugural F1 drivers’ championship in 1950, but the first decade of the sport was very much Fangio’s – the Argentine winning five times in seven seasons

The 1960s saw British drivers Graham Hill and Jim Clark notch two championships apiece, with compatriot Jackie Stewart beginning his run of three titles in five years in 1969
Jochen Rindt’s 1970 triumph is poignant for making him Formula One’s only-ever posthumous world champion – the Austrian having been killed in a practice-session crash at Monza, Italy with four races remaining of the season.
Emmerson Fittipaldi became Brazil’s first champion in 1972, the beginning of the country’s strong tradition of success in F1, while Britain’s James Hunt took his solitary title from the bitter battle Niki Lauda in 1976
Alan Jones became Australia’s second and last world champion to date in 1980, becoming the first of seven drivers to win a title in a Williams car. This era also saw the rise of the McLaren team – with drivers Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna share seven titles in eight years between 1984 and 1991
The 1990s witnessed title wins for Britain’s Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill, as well as the rise of Michael Schumacher – whose seven world championships remain a record in F1 history.
Among the current crop of drivers, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel account for the most recent 11 championships between them, with Raikkonen the last Ferrari driver to taste title success nine years ago
