Bert’s all set for Northam
OCEAN REEF racer BERT van ZUYLEN’s mighty Alfa Romeo is ready for the Northam’s Round-the-Houses festival on April 1 -2.
“There’s a FREE train from Perth to Northam on Sunday to come and visit Northam at its finest,” he said. “And a great many events and activities have been organised in the centre of town all Sunday. So it’s great and inexpensive day out, with the added bonus of the country train ride!
“And we’ve have added an extra race seat in the Alfa so, if we’re allowed, we can take passengers in the parade lap!”
The two-day event blasts off on Saturday April 1, with hill-climbing events on Mt Ommanney and the traditional Minson Motokhana display of legendary drivers navigating the tight circuit against the stopwatch from 1pm at Bernard Park.
On Sunday, there’s a full day of regularity events around the street circuit, static car displays, street stalls and family entertainment.
For Saturday’s hill-climbing events, there are public viewing points at the foot of Mt Ommanney and a free bus ride to take you to the turn one action.
Bernard Park will be a buzz with the Lions Club markets kicking the day off at 8am and continuing during the Minson Motorkhana blasts to life at 1pm. The public gets the chance to inspect the range of cars up close during this unique event.
Road Closures
On Sunday, roads in the CBD are closed during the running of each event, with pedestrian access and vehicle movement under supervision. Commercial activity continues as usual during business hours within the circuit area.
Spectators are asked to follow the instructions of race officials and track marshals at all times.
The two-day extravaganza is FREE; programs are available on site. There will be full commentary on public address throughout Sunday’s meeting which also includes a live broadcast with “Frenchy” on radiowest 6am with interviews with competitors, winners and race officials.
The events include sports cars, racing cars, historic touring cars and combinations of the three from all over WA, and some competitors travelling from the East Coast. All competition activities are under the supervision of CAMS officials.
Organised by The Vintage Sports Car Club of W.A. Inc., with support from the Shire of Northam, the event has been a popular draw card for locals as well as a tourist attraction since it was first run in 1999.
