Western Cup – Round 1

TRULY AWESOME weather greeted the opening round of the Western Cup at the Hurricane Go Kart Club in Wundowie.
Although flooding the week before did make for a very interesting track that had many drivers scratching their heads chasing the winning setup. Having said that, there were several that absolutely nailed it by qualifying on pole and winning every race, which is a huge achievement against fields of the “best in the west”.
State Champion Thomas “Mr Part Time” Schou dominated the KA3 Light class and showed the large gaggle of former juniors how it’s done. KA3 Junior graduates Keb Evans and Jakson Timmer completed the podium. Two red flags in four races for the class isn’t ideal and hopefully everyone settles down for the next round.
Cadet 9 saw a great battle between State Champ Jackson Mitchell-Rosenauer and Nash Ferraro. Nash led into the final but DNF, handing the meeting to the champ. Nash still managed third for the meeting and Kai Roggio finished a fantastic second.
KA3 Masters were lead all the way with a masterful performance by John Ray. Paul “Hugger” Hughes and Roy Tester fought out a close battle for the minor placings with Hughes coming out on top.
Open Performance saw one very evil beast of Praga kart with twin Vortex DVS motors win every race. The pilot, Glenn Fisher did an awesome job of controlling it and taking the day over Nathan Will and class rookie Jack May for third.
KA3 Junior saw “Flying” Flynn Thompson almost pull off a perfect meeting with pole position, four race wins, lead every lap but one and three fastest laps. His Flatout-powered Arrow was on rails to finish ahead of Ryan Bender’s FK Kart and Chase Hoy who managed the fastest lap of the final in his Kart Force-powered Italkart.
Cadet 12 is one of the best classes to watch again this year, the depth of the field is impressive. A big field fought it out with Jack Clohessy taking victory over Caleb Sumich and second generation karter Jett Demarte. These boys will have plenty of great battles over the years to come.
Both the TaG 125 Restricted classes were a bit low on numbers to previous years for some reason. Brad Smith took victory in the Medium class over the “Kalbarri Express” Gavin Kennedy and P plater Bryce Moore grabbed the win after a great battle all day with Daymon Nicoli in the Light class.
Junior KA4 Light saw two very talented Cadet 12 graduates take the top two places. Mason Harvey had his Deadly kart hooked up with a clean sweep of the meeting ahead of Max McRae in his Arrow. Jacob De Cerqueira rounded out the podium in third.
KA3 Medium showed up with good numbers and Jason Betts was the class of the field at his home track over State Champ Braedyn Bowra and Jordan Morris. Betts had to overcome a DQ in qualifying and still managed three race wins.
TaG 125 Light saw the cat amongst the pigeons with the “Flying Welshman” Darryl Henderson showing incredible pace in his Rotax-powered Gillard kart to take three massive wins in an X30-dominated class. Daniel Curry finished a solid second and KA3 Junior graduate Bart Horsten took a fine third place overall in his Riccardo.
Junior KA4 Heavy was won convincingly by the pocket rocket Jacob De Cerqueira, who only had his colours lowered in the final by Max Whiting who took second for the day over Kieren Ellis in a consistent third.
TaG 125 Heavy saw 22 drivers battle it out. In the end, local lad Taylor Thomas managed to come away with four close fought wins in his CRG. Robert Hooper kept him honest in second place with Daniel McLeod filling the final podium spot.
All in all, it was a great day of racing, thanks to all the officials and volunteers who help make the meeting happen, you all did a fantastic job. Next round of the Western Cup is at the Mid-West Kart Club in Geraldton on March 25. Hope to see you all there.
