May Common Sense Prevail …

AUSSIE GREAT MARK WEBBER AO is absolutely right calling on the FIA to find an alternative to loading up drivers with grid penalties for issues over which they have little control.

It’s tough enough as it is sitting in the cockpit of an intricate F1 machine travelling at better than 350km/h where vision is limited, at best.     It takes consummate skill to deal with that alone.     Of course, that’s why they get paid the big bucks.

Knowing you have little prospect of even championship points when you’re stuck at the rear of the grid through no fault of your own is patently ridiculous.     And certainly doesn’t help the pilot’s mindset.

Mark Webber, among the best drivers Australia has produced, suggests teams should be docked constructors’ points rather than what’s happening now.

Drivers can do little about ongoing mechanical issues, where the onus seems to be dropped largely on their shoulders, with the season’s limited number of engine components and gearboxes.  Grid penalties

Speaking at the recent  FIA Sport Conference in Geneva, Mark said there was “too much policing” in F1.     “I don’t want any penalties for a driver that’s had nothing to do with it,” he said.     “It’s hard enough to get the quality at the front of the grid as it is, let alone having guys diluted down the back through no reason of their own.      So we don’t need all that junk in there.”

With the New Broom now running the sport, it’ll be interesting to see what they think.      But I doubt the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes will take kindly to anyone messing with those precious constructors’ points.

More importantly, what do you think?

End AC’s rant!
