Cliffhanger for Carrington’s Rally

Australia’s oldest rally will be hotly contested on Saturday with just 35 points separating the top three vying for title honours.
The 53rd Carrington’s Traffic Services Safari Rally is the final round of the CAMS Onslow Contracting Western Australian Rally Championship.
Tom Wilde is the first 2WD competitor to lead the WARC outright since 1994. He and his co-driver Madelin Kirkhouse in their Verandah Apartments sponsored 1993 Honda Civic (pictured, above) go into this final round with a 22 point lead over Maximum Motorsport driver John O’Dowd and co-pilot Kenneth Sheil.
“The car is in great shape,” said Tom. “We’ve done the maths and we have to finish third to win the championship, so that’s our goal. But if there’s an opportunity for a win, we’ll be going for it.” Competing in a 2007 Subaru WRX STI (pictured, below), John O’Dowd leads third-placed driver Stephen Oxley in the CASA Security 2008 Rex by 13 points.
“It’s a really technical rally and it’s going to be a fight to the end. But with 80 points available for a win, there’s still plenty to fight for,” John said.
Carrington’s is also the penultimate round of the 2WD, Clubman Masters and Clubman Cup Championship. Clubman competitors tackle three stages totalling 58.93 kms in and around Chidlow, just east of Perth. WARC and 2WD teams race the clock along five stages totalling 106.96kms.
