A GROUP OF WA RACERS took to the iconic Indianapolis circuit last weekend as part of a worldwide celebration.
The team includes Neil McCrudden, David Watkins, Marty Bullock, Bruce Edger, Lance Caridine and Brian Searle. Neil transformed a container into a mobile garage to house nine cars, with spares and equipment while Dave built a car transporter/camper, pictured below. Both the container and the transporter were integral to the FJ team’s successful operation.
The team began their journey after the Historics event at Barbagallo in October, travelling to events at Sandown and Eastern Creek. The cars were shipped on to NZ for race meetings in both the north and south islands. They were later shipped to the US northeast coast. And on to Indianapolis.
The Indy event was part of a three-year Formula Junior World Tour to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the class. It resumed at last weekend’s Sportscar Vintage Racing Association at Indy! And our guys performed very well.
The tour began in South Africa in January 2016, and includes sectors in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, North America, Scandinavia and the Baltic States. It will culminate in a grand celebration of two grids at the 2018 Silverstone Classic.
Jim Clark, John Surtees, Jochen Rindt, Mike Spence, Mike Hailwood and Graf Wolfgang Von Trips were among many F1 Grand Prix drivers who formulated their careers in the FJs.
Formula Junior was also the first racing class to require roll cages.
