145 Race Cars Line up at Barbagallo
IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN to Barbagallo Raceway for a while, Saturday’s season opening NightMasters offers a great day’s entertainment.
I shall never forget the sight and sound of Tony Ricciardello’s blood-red rocketship weaving its way through a packed field from the back of a reverse grid, invariably taking the lead into the first turn.
Such incredible power that made the NightMasters his domain.
Such skills at the helm of the Chevy V8-powered Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV earned Tony a world record nine Sports Sedan championships.
Club’s 90th Anniversary?
It seems a great shame that the WA Sporting Car Club couldn’t have enticed the true champion back to celebrate the opening of what I believe is the Club’s 90th season. Maybe next year?
The card features close to 150 Improved Production Cars, WA GTs, Saloons, Street Car and Sports Cars, Historic Touring Cars, HQs and Hyundais, Formula Vees, and the brute force of Formula 1000s.
I doubt that number has been exceeded at any previous opening event.
Strong Field of Historic Touring Cars

Greg Barr is just one of a fine field of HTCs in his latest ride – the ’72 Holden GTR XU1 Torana, with its 202 engine built by Ian Tate. Greg has just bought the car from Angelo Taranto in Melbourne. It’s recognised as one of the quickest Group Toranas in Australia.
May I wish all Competitors, Crews, Officials and Volunteers, and anyone else involved during the season, a safe and successful year’s racing.
