The Friendly Club Hosts the Western Cup Series Opener February 4

The HURRICANE GO KART CLUB plays host to the highly regarded Western Cup at Wundowie, 70km east of the Perth CBD, February 4.
The Cup is a “black plate” State zone series – North, West and South-east – contested over four rounds at Wundowie, as well as Geraldton, Bunbury and Wanneroo tracks.
“It is generally considered a State series as it covers the metro tracks and attracts the top drivers,” according to Hurricane media man, Troy Thompson.
“In WA we have two recognisable number plate colours, blue and black,” he explains. “Blue distinguishes the champions (there are 12 of them here, one for each class). It’s the premier plate to win.”
Karting Australia rules allow only the national champ to carry the coveted #1.
The 753 metre Hurricane circuit is licensed for 32 karts at any one time, with a variety of challenging straights, curves and hairpins.
At eight metres wide it features extensive sand traps, safety fencing and tyre barriers. High quality lighting allows popular night racing. It’s been operating since 1961 and regularly holds State title events.
Captain America a Hit in the 70s
Troy Thompson has been involved with motorsport since he was a kid eventually racing Speedway with his Dad, Col. Col Thompson was best known as Captain America in the 70s, when he raced Solos under the sponsorship of the Harley Shop. He also raced F500s in the 80s, Speedcars in the 90s and did a few Wanneroo 6H bike races at Barbagallo. Troy briefly campaigned F500s in the 90s.
Troy became involved with karting through his sons Shae, 17, who is “usually leading the pack”, and 14-year-old Flynn who “can be very quick on his day”.
The Western Cup series continues at Geraldton March 25-26, Bunbury May 20-21, and Wanneroo June 24-25.
